Snow in Dallas

Dear Fellow Blog Followers,

Well, I guess it snows at least once a year in Dallas.  On January 10, 2011, it snowed about 3-4 inches of snow (three weeks late from Christmas).  One of our trees in the back yard was bent over quite a bit from the weight of the snow.  The neighbor across the street came to our side of the street to take pictures of his home.  It is probably unbelievable for the Dallas folks as they rarely get snow.  It felt like we were back in Calgary.

The temperature was 1 C. (34 F.) so it was cold and you could see your breath outside.  I was tempted to put my shoes on and write the word “SNOW” in the snow on the front lawn in case “they” don’t know what it was (hee, hee).

Check it out.  We do not have a shovel or a brush to clean off the cars.  Not even sure if they sell them here.

Texas Driver's License - Part Two

Dear Fellow Blog Followers,

Just before Christmas, we received our Texas Driver's Licenses in the mail.  They are somewhat different from Alberta's and we did have to turn in the beautiful Alberta licenses.  Many Texans were marveled by the AB license with the Wild Rose of Alberta, the Rockies, and commented how nice they looked.

Our TX licenses have "Temporary Visitor" in big bold letters and are in a vertical style rather than a horizontal style.  They look pretty cool.  Let's just hope we don't have to provide them to an Officer too soon.

Texas Driver's License!!!

Dear Fellow Blog Followers,

Back in November 2010, we applied for our Texas Driver's Licenses.  It seemed to be a simple, yet time consuming event as we went during the US Thanksgiving Holiday before lunch time thinking it would be quick.  Not so...

  • Waited for over 3 hours for our "random" numbers to be called (anywhere from the 300s to the 900s).
  • When we heard the number "901", someone in the waiting room yelled, "That's probably the 'Code' for Lunch Break".
  • We were numbers "304" and "305".
  • Number "999" seemed to be the number for young adults to write the driving exam.
  • We did not have to take a written or actual road test.
  • We thought that if we were there for another 2 hours, we may have been able to figure out all of the "Codes" for the numbering system... hmmm...

US Thanksgiving

Dear Fellow Blog Followers,

We celebrated the US Thanksgiving with the traditional feast for two!!!  Yummy - don't you just love turkey and all the trimmings!!!!

If you can imagine, there were two of us at the huge dining table for six.  Candles were lit, table was set, and we devoured our blessed servings which we missed during the Canadian Thanksgiving.

December Sabatical

Dear Fellow Blog Followers,

Apologies for not being here for your reading pleasure until now, but we had a very busy December! We ended up traveling to Calgary for a very hectic but awesome Christmas with our sons, arriving on Dec. 21st.

It is always great to show up and walk in the door to find the living room furniture in the dining room and the Christmas tree (partially decorated - lights only) in the middle of the living room!!!  Ugh... that had to wait a couple of days until we were ready to finish the decorations and place it properly in its spot for the Season.

Final Christmas shopping, madly decorating the tree, groceries for the big feast, frantic wrapping, and we were ready for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day festivities.  It truly was an awesome Christmas.

Our travels home on Jan. 1st, however, were not so enjoyable:
  • Flight had problems, cancelled flight, and ended up at the Calgary house just to do it all over again the next day.  HOISH!!!
  • Initially locked out, but finally got in.
  • Sleepless night, up early to catch the rescheduled flight and arrived at the airport by 6:45 am to find out the flight did not leave until 11:30 am (we were told 9:30 am confirmed departure).
  • Flight to Dallas left late (after much ado), but we finally made it back to Dallas on Jan. 2nd.
It was a pleasure as always to hear from many friends and family over the Holidays!!!

All the Best to Everyone in 2011 !!!
